There were a lot of challenges, but it was time for me to do it and leave Hark! A Vagrant behind. It’s very difficult to take your personal story and make cuts when you’re so in the thick of it, to do what’s best for a book as opposed to the thing that you maybe care about the most. I wanted to be with people who know books. I came to Drawn & Quarterly because I believe in the partnership between editors and writers.

Roach is an avid fan of graphic novels and felt instantly connected to Beaton's story as a young person navigating a post-university world and as someone who also migrated from the Maritimes.This memoir is very different from what you’ve done before in tone, length, genre. In the lead up to Canada Reads debates, Roach and Beaton spoke in conversation about their shared love of comics as a medium and both being from Cape Breton. In 2022, Ducks was named one of CBC Books' top Canadian comics and was also one of two Canadian books on Barack Obama's list of favourite books of 2022. Highlighting the ways in which humanity is often messy and vulnerable. She recounts her experiences with economic migration, sexism and environmental destruction through an illustrated narrative.
